In an effort to cow-tow to their left wing base and not appear to be soft on the anti war front, Clinton and Obama chose to vote no on the funding bill that was destined to pass anyway. Their 2 votes would not have made any difference one way or another.

The rhetoric:

“I fully support our troops” but the measure “fails to compel the president to give our troops a new strategy in Iraq,” said Clinton, a New York senator.

“Enough is enough,” Obama, an Illinois senator, declared, adding that
President Bush should not get “a blank check to continue down this same, disastrous path.”

Both probably felt like they dodged a bullet this time. Now we’ll have to see how they vote on the immigration bill. There are only 2 positions. Sovereignty or Amnesty.
